SAN JACINTO - While the second annual Soboba Golf Classic gets underway next Thursday, there is plenty of action scheduled before the event starts.

On Monday, for example, PGA Nationwide tour players were participate in practice rounds that are open to the public.

One day later, practice rounds continue, but a Junior Clinic is scheduled at 4 p.m.
The Soboba Casino Charity Pro-Am golf tournament takes place one day later.

The Country Club at Soboba Springs, site of the event, is a par 71 course that opened in 1966. Five years ago, however, the Desmond-Muirhead designed course underwent a $6 million renovation project.

Two of the holes stand out, including the par 3 15th hole that played as the most difficult par 3 hole on the Nationwide Tour last year. Also, the par 5 16th hole that measures 504 yards. For the tournament, it will converted to a par 4, which was the most difficult hole on the Nationwide Tour in 2009.

So what are you doing before your round of golf?

Taking it easy in the clubhouse? Talking to your playing companions?

Or are you out on the range, getting set for your round?

The Maderas Golf Club course, located on Old Coach Road in Poway, might have one of the best practice facilities in San Diego County. The layout, which is part of the Pechanga Resort Casino string of courses available to its client list, was ranked No. 1 by the Zagat Survey.

The practice facility, which includes a driving range and spot for short game preparation, includes grass tees, several greenside bunkers and a fairway bunker. Use of the driving range and practice facility is complimentary before a paid round of golf.

Among Maderas Golf Club's accolades includes a 4 ½-star rating from Golf Digest (Places to Play Golf, 2008), Golf Magazine (Top 100 Courses You Can Play Golf, 2008), 100 Best Golf Shops (Golf World's 100, 2009) and it's ranked No. 1 in Troon Golf's Customer Service category.

SAN JACINTO - The challenge presented by the Soboba Golf Classic is simple: "Get in the game."

Pro-Am spots are available in the Sept. 27-Oct. 3 Nationwide Tour event that will be coming to The Country Club Club at Soboba. Jerod Turner won the inaugural event last year when he beat a red-hot Derek Lamely by two shots after the 72-hole championship concluded.

Local players Brendan Steele, who finished tied for eighth place, and Rickie Fowler, who was tied for 31st (T-31), have continued on to compete in the rigorous life of professional golf. Fowler has made around $2 million this year, having recently competed in both the British Open and PGA Championship.

Both Fowler and Steele drew huge galleries during last year's Soboba event.

Pr-Am events, meanwhile, draw huge interest from golfers who make an attempt to keep a connection to the sport. The Soboba Golf Classic made a large commitment to hosting a Pro-Am event, which matches pro golfers in groups with amateur players.

There are at least 30 charities that will benefit from funds raised during the Pro-Am.

Information about the Pro-Am spots can be obtained from Stephanie Fonseca, the Charity Pro-Am coordinator (951-665-1310), or by email to sfonseca@soboba.net.

Dates for the 2011 Frank Sinatra Celebrity Invitational tournament have been for Feb. 24-26 at Eagle Falls Golf Club, part of the Fantasy Springs Casino & Resort in Indio.

It will be the 23rd annual event, one that began in 1988 as "Frank's little party." Sinatra died in 1998. Singer Pat Boone is the tournament's co-host.

The tournament benefits the Starkey Hearing Foundation. It's a five-player team gross and net scramble. One celebrity and four amateur golfers comprise a team. The team of four (4) amateur players remains together for two (2) consecutive days. The celebrity contestant changes teams for the second day. Current USGA handicaps are verified and applied to all contestants.

Hollywood stars such as the Smothers Brothers, Joe Mantegna, Dennis Farina, John Callahan, Rollie Fingers, among others, have appeared at the tournament. Last year, Ron Masak won the event.

The weekend event helped raise more than $500,000 for the Barbara Sinatra Children's Foundation earlier this year. Barbara Sinatra, the widow of Frank Sinatra, is now the tournament's chairperson.

The tournament telephone number is 760-674-8447.

Golf at Eagle Falls for $39

|

Eagle Falls Golf Course

It's summer and the rates at Eagle Falls Golf Club, the course for Fantasy Springs Casino and Resort, are as low as $39.

Through Sept. 30, golfers can play 18 holes on Monday through Thursday. On Friday-Sunday, plus holidays, the rates are set at $49. It includes a two-person golf cart with a GPS system, cooler filled with ice and water, plus use of the drive range and practice putting green.

Eagle Falls, a public course, is a tough layout with many mounds, pot bunkers and even one hole that's a near exact replica of the "Postage Stamp" - the famed eighth hole at the famous Royal Troon Golf Course in Scotland.

Few public courses match the challenge of a course like Eagle Falls. During the golf season in the Coachella Valley, golfers never pay more than $100 in greens fee at Eagle Falls.
