LAS VEGAS: Weezer perform at Cosmopolitan July 27

|

weezer_lv.JPG

When summer hits Las Vegas it becomes all pool parties all the time. One of the city's newest resort's has an all-star lineup planned this year.

The Boulevard Pool at The Cosmopolitan has a performance from Weezer Saturday, July 27 at 8 p.m.

Weezer is one of the iGuide team's favorite bands so we could talk about their awesomeness all day. However, imagine seeing Rivers and the guys poolside, even better right?

Frankly, it's not really summer until I hear "Island in the Sun" (and "Summertime" by Dj Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince).

Tickets for the event are just $50 through Ticketmaster. That's the price of a few hands of blackjack or spins of roulette.

Weezer will also perform locally during the OC Fair at The Pacific Amphitheatre in Costa Mesa Friday, July 26. Tickets for the 8:15 show are available through Ticketmaster for $39.50, $59.50 and $69.50.

Other big names playing The Cosmopolitan this summer include The Offspring, NeYo, Blink 182 and Kendrick Lamar.

LAS VEGAS: Online gambling hits town

|

online gambling.JPG

The only legal and regulated online website in the United States for playing poker for money was launched last Tuesday, April 30.

Two days later the website registered its 100,000 player.

Players from every state and 19 other countries are in he mix even though a player has to physically be in the state of Nevada to play.

And some said the poker craze was over

Ultimate Poker is the website and Station Casinos owns 57 percent of the site.

Tom Breitling is the chairman of Ultimate Poker and he owns 14 percent of the company.

The site offers limit and no-limit Texas Hold 'em poker in single table cash games, sit-and-go events and tournaments. The first tournament was offered last Sunday with a prize pool of $10,000.

The site collects revenue from a rake of each pot of live play and entry fees for tournaments.

Players must be 21 or older to register and plans to offer compacts with other state governments so players from those states can play from home are in process. California and New Jersey are the first states targeted for compacts since both states already engage in compacts for other subjects and both have a lot of poker-playing residents.

Assembly Bill 114 was approved and signed by Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval in February that will allow the state to sign interactive gaming compacts with other states.

Station Casinos is also working on plans to tie its players' club program into activity on Ultimate Poker.

Activity on the site has exceeded the expectations of everyone connected to the website and everyone else. Presently the site has 50 tables available with a maximum of 10 players per table.

What will happen once the interactive gaming compacts with other states are signed, is anyone's guess at this point.

This may trigger legislation in other states to approve legalized online poker play since they would like to capture a piece of this pie rather that allow it all to flow into Nevada.

This is a trial run for Nevada. At the one-month mark, the politicians in Nevada and the State Gaming Commission will look at the results and see what changes, if any, need to be made.

This Nevada action will probably signal the demise of any federal action on forming rules and regulations on a federal level.

The income from the site will be subject to Nevada state and federal taxes and it is assumed that information on individual players will be available to both state and federal tax agencies, just like it is in real life casinos.

Currently Nevada has no state taxes on individuals. What the state's and the site's responsibility for informing other states taxing agencies for winnings accumulated by the states players while in Nevada is not clear. Presently casinos are required to issue W-2G or 1099-Misc. forms to the IRS when a certain accumulated total win figure is reached by an individual. Since those forms are reported to the IRS, the information should be reported by the individuals on their personal income tax forms and that information then flows onto the player's state tax forms, if the state taxes income, like all but six states do now.

I only hope that the taxing agencies will consider tournament winnings as gambling wins and not contest prizes, like the IRS does currently.

Player wins from cash play would continue to be reported as gambling wins. There is no requirement for present gambling sites to record an individual's gambling losses. That probably will still be an individual's responsibility.

LAS VEGAS: Getting around in Las Vegas

|

Some visitors who drive to Las Vegas, park their car at the hotel in which they stay and use other means of transportation to get to the shows or other events because they are intimidated by Las Vegas traffic.

It doesn't have to be that way.

Las Vegas is a town that is relatively easy to get around in if you follow a few suggestions.

For drivers, heavy cab traffic plus other drivers from all over the world, can seem like too much to handle.

The trick is to stay off the busy streets. Know where you are going and take the road less traveled. Think like a local.

The best advice you can receive is stay off Las Vegas Boulevard (The Strip) and I-15 once you get in to town. Using either of them to get from your hotel to another destination is a exercise in futility. Especially during rush hour(s).

In Las Vegas rush hour is not just commuters going to work or going home, its early evening when everyone is trying to get to a specific place to see a show or event. That means the rush hour runs from 3 to 9 p.m. (or longer, depending on the day and what events are transpiring).

With all the improvements that have been made on I-15 in the Las Vegas area, there is one which I need to caution you about. There is an Express Lane going into town from California. There is another southbound. They are not like our Diamond lanes. There is no minimum amount of riders required.

The Express lane is the closest to the median. It is a high speed lane. If you get on it as you enter town, you can't exit it until Sahara Avenue. If you are staying at a resort on The Strip, you will have passed all of them up.

On the southbound, once you get on it, you have to stay on it to Tropicana Avenue.

There are two streets that parallel the I-15, one on the east side and one on the west side. The one on the west side used to be Industry Way mainly because it was along the back side of the resorts on The Strip. It has been renamed Dean Martin Drive. On the east side the street is Frank Sinatra Drive. They merge just north of Caesars Palace and have few direct connections to the main east-west streets.

They are the easiest way to get from a Strip resort to downtown. Or, for that matter, the fastest, easiest way to access the Rio without having to drive on Flamingo Road. Neither street has access to the I-15.

Main streets on the west side of the I-15 are, from the closest to I-15, Valley View Boulevard, Decatur Boulevard, Jones Boulevard, Rainbow Boulevard, and Buffalo Drive.

Main streets on the east side of I-15 are, from the closest to I-15, Paradise Road, Maryland Parkway, Pecos Road, Lamb Boulevard, and Nellis Boulevard.

Heading north as you enter the Las Vegas Valley, the main streets are: Warm Springs Road, Sunset Road, Russell Road, Tropicana Avenue, Harmon Avenue, Flamingo Road, Sands Avenue (which becomes Spring Mountain Road on the west side of I-15), Desert Inn Road, Sahara Avenue, and Charleston Avenue.

A couple of interesting facts are that Harmon Avenue and Desert Inn Road have no direct connection to I-15. That was done on purpose so Las Vegas commuters didn't have to deal with I-15 traffic. Desert Inn Road also does not directly connect to Las Vegas Boulevard for the same reason.

Koval Lane is a locals secret. It takes you from Tropicana Avenue, just behind MGM Grand, to Sands Avenue on which you can go east to Paradise Road or west to Las Vegas Boulevard.

Knowing where some of the neighborhoods are could be of value to drivers.

North Las Vegas is, naturally, north of downtown Las Vegas. To the northwest lie Summerlin and Lone Mountain.

Directly to the west is The Lakes. To the southeast is Winchester, Paradise, and Henderson. To the southwest is Spring Valley. And directly south is Enterprise and Green Valley.

LAS VEGAS: Best of list features some surprises

|

caesars_readerlist.JPG

Every year the Las Vegas Review-Journal conducts a poll of its readers on the best of Las Vegas in a variety of categories.

The results of the poll were recently published and included some surprises.

The staff of the paper also has an internal poll and the results of it were reported in the same story, where there were significant differences.

The quantity of categories is so huge I'm surprised anyone could find time to enter all of their preferences. So I'll just skim over the poll results and present data in categories that might be helpful to us Southern Californians.

RESORT

The best resort in Las Vegas polling was perhaps the biggest surprise with Bellagio, the perennial favorite in the past several years, passed over by both readers and staff. Readers chose the Las Vegas Cosmopolitan while the staff selected Caesars Palace.

BUFFET

The new Bacchanal Buffet at Caesars Palace, the most expensive, was selected by the staff but the readers selected the Feast Buffet at any of the Stations casinos.

DOWNTOWN HOTEL

The readers' poll gave the award to the Golden Nugget while the staff chose The D, the newly renovated and renamed Fitzgerald's.

MUSEUM

Readers chose The Mob Museum while the staff sided with the Neon Museum, both in the downtown area.

NIGHTCLUB

This is the only major category on which the staff and the readers agreed, as both placed the Marquee Nightclub at the Las Vegas Cosmopolitan at the top of the list.

GOURMET RESTAURANT

This was also a surprise as neither the readers nor the staff selected a restaurant at any of the top resorts with world renowned chefs. Instead the readers went for Todd's Unique Dining while the staff selected Tables 4 Two.

ENTERTAINMENT VENUES

Amusement Ride: Exotics Racing (Las Vegas Motor Speedway)

Arcade: Hi Score Barcade (65 S. Stephanie St.)

Bargain Show: Mac King Comedy Magic Show (Harrah's Las Vegas)

Cirque du Soleil Show: Ka (MGM Grand)

Big Concert Venue: The Joint (at Hard Rock Resort)

Bingo: South Point

Blackjack: Mirage

Day Club: Encore Beach Club

Free Show: Bellagio Conservatory and Botanic Gardens

Nightclub: Marquee Nightclub & Day Club (Las Vegas Cosmopolitan)

Family Attraction: Adventuredome

HOTELS

Blackjack: The D

Casino Cocktails: The D

Cocktail Waitresses: The D

Craps Tables: The D

Hotel Pool: Golden Nugget

Hotel Room Value: The D

Hotel Room: Bellagio

Local Hotel: The Cannery

Paying Slots:The D

Poker Room: Orleans

Locals Casino: Red Rock Resort

All Around Performer: Terry Fator

Comedian: Carrot Top

Show: Terry Fator

Attraction: Fountains of Bellagio

So do you agree with the Review-Journal's choices. Let us know what you think in the comments.
