UCR hosts French film festival

|

The fifth annual Tournées Festival: New French Film, hosted by the University of California, Riverside, starts Feb. 11.

The festival, presented by UCR's French Program and the Department of Comparative Literature and Foreign Languages, will feature screenings of five films in 35mm with English subtitles at the University Village UltraStar Cinemas. The festival wraps up Feb. 25.

The event's theme is "Liberté, Identité, Modernité!" and plays on the ideals of the French Revolution, which recently celebrated its 220th anniversary, according to a festival advisor.

The University Village UltraStar Cinemas are located at 1201 University Avenue in Riverside. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.; screening begins at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $8 for adults and $5 for students and seniors with ID.

The following films will be screened at the festival:

Feb. 11 - "The Class" ("Entre les murs") - The winner of the 2008 Palme d'Or at Cannes, this unsparing, unsentimental film, directed by Laurent Cantet, is about a teacher attempting to teach the French language to his multi-ethnic students, many of whom hail from former colonized countries. In an unusual example of art imitating life, the film was based on the best-selling book by real-life teacher François Bégaudeau and is a hybrid documentary-and-narrative work.

Feb. 17 - "Love Songs" ("Les chansons d'amour") - This modern musical set in present-day Paris is sensual and minimalist. Ismaël and his live-in girlfriend, Julie, open their relationship to include Ismaël's coworker Alice. Then tragedy strikes and Ismaël's life is upended.

Feb. 18 - "I've Loved You So Long" ("Il y a longtemps que je t'aime")
- Featuring a beautiful and subtle performance by Franco-British actress Kristin Scott Thomas, this film is about a woman re-acclimating to life outside of prison. Scott Thomas plays Juliette Fontaine, who is taken in by her younger sister, literature professor Léa. Tension increases as the reasons for Juliette's absence are revealed.

Feb. 24 - "The Beaches of Agnes" ("Les plages d'Agnes") - On the eve of her 80th birthday, Agnès Varda, often referred to as "the godmother of the French New Wave," decided to make the autobiographical "The Beaches of Agnes," guiding us through her extraordinary 55-year career and poignantly reminiscing about her husband, the filmmaker Jacques Demy (best known for "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg"), who died of AIDS in 1990 -- information that Varda makes public here for the first time.

Feb. 25 - "The Secret of the Grain" ("La graine et le mulet") - The Best Film winner at Cannes, this drama takes place in the southern French city of Sète, where the patriarch of a large and vivacious North African family is an elderly dockworker. When his job of many years is suddenly no longer secure, he decides to restore an old boat in the harbor and turn it into a floating couscous restaurant. It's a wildly ambitious project, and the increasingly ailing Slimane will need the help of all of his family members to pull it off.

IE film group goes gangbusters

|

Riverside resident Eric Harnden led the second meeting of the Independent Filmmakers of the Inland Empire group Wednesday. Membership continues to increase and group leaders are hoping to continue to get the word out about filmmaking in the region.

Inlandsocal was at the group's February meeting, click here to see the video.

-- Article by Eric Harnden, President of the Independent Filmmakers of the Inland Empire

film copy.jpgWednesday's meeting of the Independent Filmmakers of the Inland Empire was a real treat and the response was an exciting surprise. There were approximately forty people in attendance, a huge jump from the eight that came to the first meeting.

Since the group is new, the reasons for these first meetings were to 1) establish the group, 2) introduce filmmaking enthusiasts to one another and 3) start to organize the group and structure of the meetings. I've found with related past activities, like when I ran a 48 hour film project team, that it takes a number of meetings before things find their groove.

Because one of the main purposes of the group is to help filmmakers, we surveyed the group to see what they expected from coming to these meetings, how they would like the meetings to run and what they wanted to see at future meetings.

Having gone to numerous successful film related and other types of enthusiast group meetings, I am patterning the basic structure of the "IFIE" meetings after those. Taking from the desires of the group, we will be holding a structured format agenda with announcements, education, presentations, show and tells, networking time and raffles.

Filmmaking is a dynamic process and I fully expect these meetings to have a dynamic life to them but one thing's for certain, there are a lot of independent filmmakers and related crew, talent and artists here in the Inland Empire and we are here to help them do what they what to do, create films.

Because of the overwhelming response and anticipated growth of the group, we are looking for a bigger venue in which to hold our monthly meetings.

To find out about more about the group or when and where the next meetings will take place, please click here.

Wire reports

The day has finally come. After eight weeks atop the box office rolls, "Avatar" finally fell from the top spot.

The romance "Dear John" ruled at theaters this weekend, according to preliminary estimates.

Adapted from Nicholas Sparks' popular novel, "Dear John" features Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried. The romance debuted as the No. 1 movie with $32.4 million, knocking off the blockbuster "Avatar" after seven weekends in first place.

"Avatar" slipped to No. 2 with $23.6 million, raising its domestic total to $630.1 million.
Directed by James Cameron, "Avatar" topped his "Titanic," unil last week the biggest grossing film of all time.

The results:

1. Dear John (Sony / Screen Gems) $32.4 million
2. Avatar (Fox) $23.6 million
3. From Paris with Love (Lionsgate) $8.1 million
4. Edge of Darkness (Warner Bros.) $7.0 million
5. Tooth Fairy (Fox) $6.5 million

The Independent Filmmakers of the Inland Empire group nearly outgrew their meeting room at the Coffee Depot in Riverside Wednesday.

About 40 people attended the group's second meeting but it hopes to continue expanding.

Riverside resident Eric Harnden started the group recently after participating in the 48-Hour Film Project where he saw there were dozens of other filmmakers in the region.

Inlandsocal.com covered the meeting Feb. 3, click here to see the video.

The next meeting of the Independent Filmmakers of the Inland Empire will be held in March. For information visit their Web site here.

After days of speculation and rumor, Los Angeles prosecutors have announced that Dr. Conray Murray will be formally charged Monday in the death of Michael Jackson.

murray.jpgAlthough the district attorney's office has not confirmed it, Murray is expected to be charged with involuntary manslaughter, which carries a maximum penalty of four years in prison.

While Murray has admitted treating the late pop star for insomnia with the hospital-strength anesthetic propofol, he has denied any wrongdoing. The coroner ruled the singer's death a homicide caused by a propofol overdose along with a use of sedatives administered by Murray.

The filing of the case and Murray's surrender has been delayed due to infighting between the police and prosecutors, a source close to the matter tells PEOPLE. The LAPD wants Murray to be brought to a courthouse in handcuffs, whereas prosecutors feel that is unnecessary, given Murray's lack of a previous criminal record.

It remains to be seen whether Murray will be allowed to surrender Monday to a police station for booking and post bail, or whether he'll be arrested and brought to a courthouse in handcuffs.

Three days after the nominees for the 82nd annual Academy Awards were announced, the academy has decided to allow four producers to take credit for the Oscar-nominated film "The Hurt Locker." The four include director Kathryn Bigelow, Mark Boal, Nicolas Chartier and Greg Shapiro.

The Academy's press release is below courtesy of thewrap.com:

Beverly Hills, CA -- Producer credits for 82nd Academy Awards Best Picture nominees "The Blind Side" and "The Hurt Locker" have been determined by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Producers Branch Executive Committee. Credits are as follows:

"The Blind Side" - Gil Netter, Andrew A. Kosove and Broderick Johnson, producers.
"The Hurt Locker" - Kathryn Bigelow, Mark Boal, Nicolas Chartier and Greg Shapiro, producers.

Academy rules state that normally no more than three producers may be named as nominees in the Best Picture category. However, the rules allow for an additional producer to be named under extraordinary circumstances. In finding that all of the producers of "The Hurt Locker" had fully functioned as genuine producers of the film, the committee chose to exercise the "extraordinary circumstances" provision of the rules.

Producers for the other eight motion pictures nominated in the Best Picture category - "Avatar," "District 9," "An Education," "Inglourious Basterds," "Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire," "A Serious Man," "Up" and "Up in the Air" - were announced on February 2 and remain unchanged.

Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2009 will be presented on Sunday, March 7, 2010, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center®, and televised live by the ABC Television Network. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 200 countries worldwide.

Actor Charlie Sheen's stolen Mercedes was found overturned hundreds of feet down a cliff near his Sherman Oaks home early Friday, but there's no evidence anyone was in the car when it went into the ravine, police said.

CharlieSheen.jpgPolice got an emergency call around 4 a.m. from an OnStar-style alert system that calls emergency officials when there is a problem with the vehicle that may require assistance, Officer Wendy Reyes said.

At about the same time, Sheen called police to say his four-door Mercedes-Benz had been stolen, Officer Bruce Borihanh said.

Police and firefighters found the car 300 to 400 feet down a cliff, upside-down in the brushy ravine.

They searched the area on foot and with an infrared-equipped helicopter but found nobody in or around the car, Borihanh said.

"They've looked all around the hillside. There's nobody in the car, nobody around (and no) evidence of anybody being around at the moment of impact," he said.

Sheen was not believed to have been in the car because he would have been badly injured in the accident and "I don't know how he would have gotten back up" the cliff, Borihanh said.

"It's being treated as an auto theft investigation," he said.

Sheen's longtime rep Stan Rosenfield to msnbc.com, "Reports concerning a stolen car belonging to Charlie Sheen are accurate enough. Charlie is fine, and the police are investigating."

A call to an attorney for Sheen's wife, Brooke Sheen, also was not immediately returned.

Sheen, 42, the star of the CBS comedy "Two and a Half Men," was arrested after a Christmas Day domestic disturbance at his Aspen home. A police officer's arrest affidavit quoted his wife, Brooke Sheen, as saying the actor pinned her on a bed while holding a knife to her throat.

Sheen denies threatening his wife. He's scheduled to be arraigned Monday in Aspen on domestic violence charges. He and his wife also are seeking modification of an order that prevents them from communicating with each other. She has said they love each other and want to reconcile.
