I've got one child who loves Chinese food and another who wouldn't touch it with a 10-foot chopstick, but despite the picky eater in the house, we decided to give the new Hong Kong Cuisine in Redlands a try.

The quick-service restaurant, located at the corner of Brookside Avenue and Tennessee Street, opened last week. It features fast food and sit-down options and a bright, clean decor.

Vanessa Franko/The Press-Enterprise

I had heard good things about Tin Lizzy's Cookie Cafe before our visit earlier this week. The building, located in a small strip mall in the Mount Rubidoux area of Riverside, has a modest front. But the cookies are anything but modest.

The cafe is best known for its cookies, which are made from scratch daily. Open weekdays, the restaurant also offers sandwiches, soups, salads and coffee.

I like variety. So do most kids I know, especially the picky ones. This week, we chose Pat & Oscar's in Temecula for that very reason -- variety. And we had one pint-sized picky eater who was sure to find something appealing if we had enough options.

The restaurant chain has several Family Value Meal packages that can feed up to six people, with food to spare.

Documentary through a child's eyes

Written by guest author Dianne Bright:

My daughter loves to take pictures. So, when she asks to take some pictures, I somewhat reluctantly hand over my $400 camera while reminding her to be careful. Then, she comes back with shots of everything in my house, ranging from one of me typing at my laptop to ten different angles of my dog's head. She captures images of her feet, our couches and china hutch, along with some unique views from each downstairs room.

Dianne Bright
Guest Author

Now she's outside as I write, so I can only imagine that I'm going to have a plethora of tree and plant shots, along with hundreds of brightly colored water balloon pictures as well. She's shooting another one of our dog at the moment. What a sweet doggie we've had over these past seven years, who tenderly puts up with so much "love" from our three kids.

One thing that always surprises me when I hand off the camera to one of my kids is the interesting perspective that I gain after viewing their pics. They frequently love to take pictures of our family pictures. It's as if they realize the immeasurable value of capturing the moment. They too sense that life is short. Hence, the plethora of questions about life and death and heaven and quandaries like, "What hurts more, getting eaten by a crocodile or falling into hot lava?"

Auditions for 'The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee'

Theatre 29 and Director Kathryn Ferguson have set auditions for the musical comedy, "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" for Monday, July 5 at 7 p.m. on the Main Stage at Theatre 29, located at 73637 Sullivan Rd., in Twentynine Palms.

The musical comedy tells the story of six young people in the throes of puberty, overseen by grown-ups who barely managed to escape childhood themselves, learn that winning isn't everything and that losing doesn't necessarily make you a loser.

The show will take the stage for five weeks from August 27 through September 25. A cast of nine singer/actors are needed, including six "child" roles played by adults (as in the original Broadway production) There are no roles for children under age.

Here are the parts:

William Barfee- (Tenor) Insecure, a little bit of a bully, can only breathe from one nostril and has severe allergies. A finalist in last year's Bee, he was disqualified for a health-related incident, an event he is all too familiar with.

Olive Ostrovsky- (Soprano) Little Girl Lost, result of inattentive parenting. Sweet, Naive. Her mom's in an ashram in India. Her dad promises that, this time, he'll try to make it. Her best friend is the dictionary.

Leaf Coneybear- (Baritenor) Preferable red head, marches to his own drummer, a bit spacey. As just the second runner-up in his district' Bee, he really shouldn't be here. He makes his own clothes.

Marcy Park- (Soprano/Mezzo-soprano) Chronic over-achiever, excels at anything she attempts, but finds no joy in the success. She made it all the way to ninth place in Nationals last year. She sleeps three hours a night.

Loggaine Schwartzandgrubenierre- (Soprano) A very young politico, vocal, opinionated, but craving acceptance. Must be able to do convincing lisp. The youngest of the competitors, her stage fathers would make Mama Rose blush.

Chip Tolentino- (Tenor) Boy Scout, the "stud" of the bee. Outward confidence masks inward fears. Last year's Putnam County champ is beginning to learn the ups and downs of puberty.

Mitch Mahoney- (Tenor) Preferably African-American, confident sexy, dangerous but with a good heart. Sings R&B/Gospel attitude songs. Fulfilling his community service, this former felon is now the Bee's Comfort Counselor, handing out juice boxes and a dose of reality to the losers.

Vice Principal Douglas Panch- Must have deadpan comedic timing. Non-Singing Role, The "incident" of five years ago almost forgotten, this Lake Hemingway-Dos Passos Junior High Vice Principal is now in a better place, thanks to a high-fiber diet and Jungian analysis.

Rona Lisa Peretti- (Soprano) Strong singer, consummate professional, she is the big "bee". This former Spelling Bee champ is not only the county's top Realtor, she also runs a highly lucrative e-Bay business, selling sensible pumps at sensible prices.

The director asks that those who audition come prepared with either a karaoke tape or professional backing track as accompaniment, (No background vocals, please!) as there will be no live accompaniment available. Dress to move.

Be prepared for cold reading, pre-selected sides are available for review on our website, www.theatre29.com , choose the "Auditions" tab and follow the links.

Music samples from the production are also available on that page. Also seeking technical support in stagehand and set construction capacities and volunteer "Audience Wranglers" as the show is audience participatory.

Quality time with our kids

Written by guest author Dianne Bright:

Sometimes as parents, we forget to enjoy quality time with our kids. It's easy to miss out on the fun, the laughter, the sweet smiles, and the unsolicited bear-hugs because there are so many other things vying for our time. The arduous regimen of cleaning the house, clothing the kids, buying the groceries, paying the bills, and finishing homework sometime before 9pm can feel overwhelming. But, that's the very reason that we must spend some quality time with our kids somewhere in the middle of it all. Here are four ideas to get you started:

First, ask your kids silly questions. If yours are anything like mine, their responses alone will solicit some great connection-points, along with hearty laughter and some smiles as well. You could ask them the color of the wind, what the sun tastes like, or what they would add to marshmallow soup.

Pat & Oscar's has something for everyone

Weekly Family Dining Profile: We're looking for places that are kid friendly, have good prices and healthy menus. Here is the rundown on our Pat & Oscar's experience:

I like variety. So do most kids I know, especially the picky ones. This week, we chose Pat & Oscar's in Temecula for that very reason -- variety. And we had one pint-sized picky eater who was sure to find something appealing if we had enough options.

The restaurant chain has several Family Value Meal packages that can feed up to six people, with food to spare.

In addition to the tasty food, the Pat & Oscar's in Temecula has great ambience. It's located on the edge of the Temecula Duck Pond, a large park with a walking track surrounding the water, home to plenty of ducks and turtles.

My son - Charmin', Poo-caso and Casper

Written by guest author Bonnie Woodrome:

Mother's Day is great -- flowers, hugs, love from the kids and the hubby -- but somehow, moms leave out the most interesting parts. Or am I the only mom with a cherub full of trouble on this time-honored holiday? Well, my little man did not disappoint this Mother's Day.

Bonnie Woodrome
Guest Author

His sister calls him Charmin', as in Prince, not the brand of toilet paper, and he absolutely is. He has a smile that warms your heart and a charismatic personality to match. You wouldn't believe that this little angel has so much mischief inside.

Charmin' will be 2 next month and every year I have received a gift like no other from him. Last year, I heard him awaken, upstairs in his room, from a long night's sleep. I made my way up the stairs and peeked into his room to see what he was up to. There, I saw a boy naked from the shirt down. His diaper thrown to a corner and pajama pants in a heap. He was smiling and laughing and covered in, well, you know... I guess, Betty White put it best on Saturday Night Live -- "He was a regular Poo-caso". The mess was all over him, the crib the sheets -- I spent a good majority of that mother's day up to my elbows in some serious antibacterial soap and water!

Appreciating the women who take the time

This was written by guest blogger Debbie Yocum. I missed it in my inbox and now it's late! But still apt, since most moms (myself included) are still enjoying our construction paper mom's day creations, handpicked flowers and other fun goodies we got yesterday. Thanks for sharing Debbie!

Mother's Day is just around the corner and hopefully our kids will have a handwritten poem already prepared, sitting next to the flower picked from the garden, or a card or even a kiss and a hug. Mother's Day is special just because it is a day assigned to us to feel acknowledged. Yesterday I was having lunch with my friend Rebecca, who is a new mom at age 39. I had brought a Mother's Day card with me and when I handed it to her she reached out and hugged me and said "This is my first Mother's Day card ever!"

As we sat and ate our lunch in a crowed restaurant in Orange County she told me that before she had the baby she had very little time for family. Her life was so full with her career and her friends that it was only after she had her son that she realized how much she really missed her family.

Unexpected lesson on motherhood

Written by guest author Maura Ammenheuser:

One of the best lessons about motherhood -- about life, really -- I ever learned came to me from somebody unexpected. It wasn't on Mother's Day and it didn't come from my own mother, but I'll never forget it.

Maura Ammenheuser
Guest Author

Years ago, when my children were very young -- my son a preschooler and my daughter barely out of infancy -- I relied on a neighborhood teenager (I'll call her Rose) for a lot of babysitting. She lived up the block, a sweet kid, bubbly and affectionate with my children, who adored her.

At age 15, Rose was in that adolescent stage when she and her parents -- mostly her dad -- were butting heads a lot. Rose was aching for more freedom, dad was holding firm on a lot of rules that Rose felt were unreasonably strict and she often felt frustrated or sad about her relationship with her father.

As far as I could tell, Rose was a bright, decent kid, probably not the type to be a major handful. I didn't want to get involved with whatever disputes were going on between another parent and his kid, however, so when Rose vented to me a bit about her father, I'd hug her, assure her that dad was probably making decisions out of love and parental concern and that someday everything would be easier.

Fans turn out for Temecula boy's 'Iron Man' part debut

The matinee perforance of 'Iron Man 2' at The Movie Experience in Murrieta was packed with fans Saturday - not just of the movie, but of Temecula's 6-year-old Davin Ransom, a.k.a. young Tony Stark.

Davin was cast as Stark as a child and played opposite "Mad Men" star John Slattery, who played Howard Stark. In the movie Davin appeared in an old film reel Tony Stark watched that showed his father from years ago. In the background Davin, as young Tony Stark, played with a piece of a large city model until he was shooed off screen.

When little Davin made his appearance on the big screen, the movie audience clapped and cheered. The Ransom family - Mom, Dad, little brother and grandparents - watched from their seats as well.

'Iron Man 2' took in $52.4 million domestically on its opening day Friday, a nearly 50 percent increase over the $35.2 million first day of the original "Iron Man" two years ago.

"It was cool," Davin said of seeing himself on screen.

He liked the experience enough that he plans to keep acting. But he thinks acting might be too scary for his 2-year-old brother Dalon.

Friends of the family, including several fellow actors-in-training from the Corky Pigeon acting school in Lake Elsinore, turned out to cheer him on as well.

"It was really cool," said Bianca Greene, 14, of Lake Elsinore. "I got to meet, like, a famous person."

Davin's friend, 4-year-old Mason McNutty, also attended the screening. Mason has had a couple acting gigs too, including a Playschool commercial and a bit part in "Diary of a Whimpy Kid."

"We're here to cheer on Davin," said Cindy McNutty, Mason's mom.

Now that Davin has seen "Iron Man 2" he's hoping he can see the first one.

"My dad rented it, but he didn't let me watch it since it's PG -13," he said.

Davin's parents, Heidi and Phillip Ransom were happy with the turnout.

"It's great to see this much support," Heidi said.

Young Temecula actor debuts on big screen in 'Iron Man 2'

Many kids dream of being a super hero, but Temecula's Davin Ransom actually gets to do it -- or at least act like one.

The 6-year-old will play the role of young Tony Stark, who grows up to be the heavy-metal-suited Iron Man in the Paramount Pictures/Marvel Studios sequel, "Iron Man 2."

Among his tasks: "sleeping on my dad's shoulder," Davin said.

The young actor plays opposite "Mad Men" star John Slattery, who portrays Tony Stark's father, Howard Stark, a pioneering arms mogul. The elder Stark's clash with the father of a revenge-seeking Russian weapons czar sets the whole action-flick plot in motion.

Davin is not on screen for long, but for such a small actor, it's a very big movie.

"Iron Man 2" already has had a huge start at the foreign box office, grossing $100.2 million within five days of its April 30 opening. The film opened overseas in advance of its U.S. debut today to get an extra week of screen time before World Cup soccer fever begins June 11.

Despite his age, Ransom is a veteran thespian. He portrays Spencer Cassadine in a recurring role on ABC's "General Hospital," and has appeared on the prime-time series "Desperate Housewives" and "In the Motherhood."

Some spending money for vacay

Written by guest author Dianne Bright:

So, here we are in May ... already. Can you believe it? That means that summer vacation is quickly approaching. If your family is anything like mine, you love to spend money on vacation. But, because of all of our other monthly expenses, from the kids' spring clothes to gear for all the extra-curriculars, we haven't had the chance to save a bunch of spending money for our upcoming vacation. So, here's how to tackle this dilemma.

First, you need some motivation. Picture your family sipping tasty frapps near the beach. Later, you sit with that new book you bought at that fun bookstore near the timeshare resort in a lounge-chair by the pool. Your kids pine for ice cream each day to battle the hot summer sun; you don't want to pass up Golden Spoon or Coldstone either. So, go ahead and upgrade to the large cup because you've got the cash in hand. Those amazing dinners to Sammy's Woodfire Pizza and Olive Garden should motivate you as well.

So, let's get saving. Here are four ideas to get you started on your family's plan:

Summer fun with a side of sweet

Special to The Press-Enterprise

Weekly Family Dining Profile: We're looking for places that are kid friendly, have good prices and healthy menus. Here is the rundown on our Nubi Yogurt experience:

This week, the weather started feeling like summer. Shorts came out, swim suits went on and we spent a lot of hours in the pool. We wanted something cold and sweet after a hot swim, so we headed to Nubi Yogurt in Redlands for do-it-yourself frozen yogurt creations.

Nubi locations have a variety of frozen yogurt and sorbet flavors, as well as an array of fresh fruit, cookie, cereal and candy toppings. Most of the yogurt is fat free or 98 percent fat free.

Some of the regular flavors offered include vanilla, cheesecake, peanut butter, plain tart, blueberry tart, café latte, coconut, raspberry and green tea. The evening we visited Nubi, there was also red velvet cake (a hit with the kids), toffee nut and raspberry pomegranate tart.

Look for Temecula boy in new 'Iron Man 2'

Many kids dream of being a super hero, but Temecula's Davin Ranson actually gets to do it - or at least act like one. The 6-year-old will play the part of young Tony Stark in the upcoming "Iron Man 2," which premiers nationwide in theaters Friday, May 7.

Davin also has a recurring role in ABC's "General Hospital" and has appeared on ABC's "Desperate Housewives" and "In the Motherhood."

Davin Ransom

He started acting after a friend of the family commented on how good Davin was at acting out scenes. His mother, Heidi Ransom, signed him up for an actor's workshop at Corky Pigeon in Lake Elsinore, where he was picked up by Bobby Starr Management.

Little Davin said in a phone interview that he didn't have a lot of words to memorize for the part of young Tony Stark. But he had to act out a few scenes.

"I had to pick up this like pretend city, and I was flying airplanes on my dad's desk," he said. "And I was sleeping on my dad's shoulder."

Davin has had some training at the Temecula Arts Center, as well as private tutoring, but mostly practices his scenes with his mom.

"He seems to have a natural talent for it," Heidi Ransom said. "When I review lines with him, I never tell him how. He seems to be able to understand, the character is supposed to be sad or scared."

For "Iron Man 2" Davin spent two days at the Los Angeles Paramount studio - one in wardrobe fitting and the other shooting the scenes.

Davin will be at The Movie Experience in Murrieta Saturday, May 8 signing autographs after watching a matinee show at 11 a.m.

Science center exhibit to explore space

The Western Science Center in Hemet will host the new exhibit, "The Space Spot" May 28 through January 9. The interactive exhibit was developed by the Pacific Science Center with support by the National Science Foundation. It is sponsored locally by the City of Hemet and AT&T.

Special to The Press-Enterprise

"The Space Spot" includes 17 interactive stations, a portable planetarium and a "Book Nook" with relevant reading material. Here are some highlights:

A Sunful of Jupiters - How do the sizes of the Earth, sun and Jupiter compare? See how many scale-sized "Jupiters" will fit inside a "sun" globe. Then see how
many pea-sized "Earths" fit in a single "Jupiter."

Star Spectra - Just how do astronomers know which gases are in stars? Visitors use a spectroscope to figure out which elements are glowing.

Swirl World - Make a giant red spot with this exhibit, which simulates the weather bands found in Jupiter's atmosphere. Spin the globe and watch
fascinating patterns develop.

What's It Weigh? - How much does a can of Coke weigh on Jupiter? The Moon? The Sun? This exhibit demonstrates the concept of gravity in dramatic
fashion as people easily lift the can of Coke representing gravity on the Moon and
then attempt to lift the one representing gravity on the Sun.
