Riverside Youth Theatre will open its 12th season with two contemporary musicals, "Into the Woods" and "Into the Woods Jr." presented in repertory.
"Into the Woods" is a two act Broadway musical, rated PG. Stephen Sondheim's story is a fractured fairy tale with an ambivalent Cinderella, a blood-thirsty Little Red Riding Hood and a Witch who raps. When a Baker and his Wife learn they've been cursed with childlessness by the Witch next door, they embark on a desperate quest to obtain the special objects required to break the spell. All the fairy tale character's wishes are granted at the end of Act One, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later, some with disastrous results.
"Into the Woods" is a lively fantasy in the style of "The Princess Bride," which serves as a lesson about community responsibility and the stories we tell our children. The cast includes students ages 12 to 20. The show is directed by Debbie Wolgemuth, with musical direction by Sarah Horn.
"Into the Woods Junior," a one act version of the Broadway musical, is rated G and is 90 minutes in length. The story is a cockeyed fairy tale where Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack (from the beanstalk) and The Witch meet and interact in the woods.
"Into the Woods Junior" is a funny and engaging way to get young performers to think about the stories and characters they've grown up with and the ethical issues raised in them. The Junior cast features students ages 6 to 12 and is directed by high school students Hannah Wolgemuth and Audrey Cella.
"Into the Woods" plays at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 11, 12, 18 and 19, and at 3 p.m. Nov. 20.
"Into the Woods Jr" will play at 10 a.m. Nov. 11 and at 3 p.m. Nov. 12, 13 and 19.
