Coachella: Faith No More gets epic, literally

Faith No More brought humor and funky bass face-melting metal for an epic performance at the Coachella festival Saturday night.

I blogged a little bit about how the band came out in suits and to Peaches & Herb's "Reunited," but here are some more notes from the set after "We Care a Lot."

The band played "Last Cup of Sorrow" and frontman Mike Patton was wailing into a megaphone. After the song, he had some questions for the audience.

"Are we having fun coachella?" he asked. "You look confused. I know that we look like were 80 years old, but give us a ... break."

Then, in another hilarious song choice, the band played a cover of the Michael Jackson hit "Ben." Patton hits all the notes and at the end of the song, tells security to let him go as he did a stage dive into the crowd.

Then it was time for more Faith No More originals and the megaphone came out again for "Surprise You're Dead" and the band followed it with "The Gentle Art of Making Enemies."

Patton went into his gutteral growl, sneering as the band continued with "Midlife Crisis."

"Thank you very much Coachella," Patton said after the song and then told the crowd they looked sexy before going into "Epic," the band's biggest hit.

There were no pianos blowing up at the end of it, sadly. That's the only way it could have been cooler.

The the band followed up with the dark and ominous "Ashes to Ashes."

Patton thanked the crowd for listening and being patient and then got them to wave their hands from side to side.

"Tattooed boys and girls, hands in the ... air," he demanded.

The band ended its set with "Just a Man."

Patton still sounds good, and had a commanding presence on stage, the band was tight. I only wish they could have played longer, and that they drew a bigger crowd. Missing that set might have been an ultimate Coachella crime.
