THE VOICE: Your thoughts on Lee Koch

NUP_147811_1046.JPG

Temecula musician Lee Koch appeared on the battle rounds of "The Voice" Monday night.

Unfortunately, he didn't advance with his rendition of Nirvana's "Heart Shaped Box," with fellow member of Team Xtina, Lindsey Pavao, moving on to the live rounds.

What did you think about Christina Aguilera's decision?

Koch is touring in Austin, Texas and heading to Nashville for some shows. If you are headed to SXSW, check him out.

Hear more of Lee's music at www.leekochmusic.com.

It's time for the battle between Temecula's Lee Koch and the girl with growing-out Skrillex hair, Lindsey Pavao.

They're singing Nirvana's "Heart-Shaped Box."

I really think Lee is owning it on the first chorus. The way Christina Aguilera is looking at Adam Levine I think she has her mind made up.

I think both singers are doing a nice job on a really difficult song.

Blake Shelton looks kind of scared.

Cee Lo Green thinks that Lee looked like Jesus a couple of times. He didn't think either one outshined the other, but he's picking Lee.

Levine found a "delightfully creepy" performance. He picks Lee.

Blake Shelton doesn't know the song. He would have picked "Monster Mash." However, he picked Lindsey.

Christina is proud of Lee for putting his soul into it.

She selects Lindsey Pavao to move on. Lee gives her a big hug.

"I guess I'm just hitting the road now," Lee told the crowd.

Aguilera said that what tipped the scales what Lindsey's versatility.

However, having listened to Lee's original music, I think he has an incredibly bright future in music. Go check him out at www.leekochmusic.com.

Lee Koch and Lindsey Pavao have been selected to go into battle by Christina Aguilera

"You're so unique as artists," Aguilera said.

She has selected Nirvana's "Heart-Shaped Box."

Um, what?

"I felt the real artistry that exudes from both of you," she said.

Aguilera selected it because of the textures of their voice.

"Nirvana is one of Lindsey's favorite bands," Lee Koch said.

"I'm still kind of learning the song," he continued.

"Lee's got a really cool voice," Pavao said.

Koch's celebrity mentor is Jewel.

Aguilera wants him to get into the song and study the structure of the melody.

She wants him to connect with the song.

Jewel wants him to enunciate more and connect to Kurt Cobain's lyrics.

Having met Lee and his lovely wife, I think he's a bit happier than Cobain.

"This is one of those do or die moments for him," Jewel said.

Lindsey Pavao gets Lionel Richie as her advisor.

He wants Lindsey to get over her shyness.

It's battle night.

"There is a lot on the line. Nothing's going to get in the way or stop me," Koch said.

"I'm not quite ready to go back to the bakery," he said.

Commercial break.

Kim Yarbrough and Whitney Myer from Adam Levine's team are battling on Mary J. Blige's "No More Drama."

Yarbrough has the life experience and the T-shirt.

Alanis Morissette is Myer's mentor. She wants her to be present.

Levine wants her to focus on being Whitney.

Yarbrough gets Robin Thicke. She feels like she can relate to the drama of life.

Thicke wants more tension.

"For her it's knowing when to tame the beast," he said.

This is going to be a big battle.

"I truly felt like I was watching one of those Diva concerts," Blake Shelton said. He doesn't know what to do and picks Carson Daly.

Kim wins.

Does this mean we'll finally see Lee Koch soon?

It's time for Team Cee Lo with rocker Juliet Simms and folk singer Sarah Golden. They're singing Rod Stewart and The Faces' "Stay With Me."

Green brings in Babyface to mentor Golden.

They like the yodel. She is going to stay true to who she is.

R&B star and producer Ne-yo is Simms' advisor.

I think the deck is stacked in Juliet's favor. I personally love her rocker voice but not the weird bodysuit with the faux fur oversized collar.

"You guys are very different singers," Green says.

Time for the battle.

I am actually liking Sarah a little bit more in the opening, but I think Juliet is going to take it.

Adam Levine said it was awesome and he loves Juliet. Blake picks Sarah for her versatility. Christina picks Juliet because it's a "no brainer."

Cee Lo wants to keep both, but selects Juliet.

Things we just learned--Blake Shelton really digs Foster the People's "Pumped Up Kicks."

He's pitted Charlotte Sometimes and Lex Land against each other for this round.

Shelton chose those two because of their personalities.

Charlotte's advisor is Kelly Clarkson. "Vocally she's stellar, she's got a killer voice," Clarkson said.

Charlotte wants to tone herself down a little bit.

Lex is getting advice from Shelton's wife, Miranda Lambert--Lambert and Shelton are headlining the final day of the 2012 Stagecoach Country Music Festival, by the way.

Lex is trying to get over her nerves.

"There's a mystery to you. Something draws me to you," Lambert said.

She thinks Lex is more confident than she lets on.

Lambert also leaves Lex a nice voicemail while she is driving.

Another commercial break and now we're back with more introductions from Carson Daly.

I don't think I understand this song choice other than it's really popular.

Charlotte seemed to be too overdone for me.

Christina Aguilera calls Lex's voice "sexy." She called Charlotte "sassy."

Cee Lo would have picked Charlotte. Adam would have picked Lex.

But the decision is Blake's. He selects Charlotte.

I liked Lex more.

Cee Lo's cat is nowhere to be seen.

And we're back from commercial. Aguilera is choosing between Sera Hill and Geoff McBride. She's going with her gut and the winner is Hill.

"I'm so happy that Sera's a part of my team," Aguilera said.

This means Hill moves on to the live shows.

McBride thanks everyone and is very classy.

Cee-Lo, channeling his inner Bond villain, is shown with a fluffy white cat as he explains that McBride is more soulful.

Seriously, is anyone else seeing the Blofeld comparison?

Tonight, 12 artists will go on stage, but only six will survive. We see Temecula's Lee Koch with the rest of the remaining contestants.

"If you want to stick around, you've got to take that spotlight and own it," Christina Aguilera told her team.

Up first are Geoff McBride and Sera Hill, who are singing Aretha Franklin's "Chain of Fools."

Each coach brought in some of the biggest names in music, and Aguilera brought in Lionel Richie as a mentor.

"His delivery is unbelievable," Richie said about McBride.

He also wants McBride to lose the glasses and connect with the audience with swagger.

Hill's advisor is Jewel who wants her to bring the emotion to win.

Now, with as much of a "Let's Get Ready to Rumble" introduction that he can muster, host Carson Daly welcomes the contestants to the battle.

I am more puzzled by Aguilera's hair accessory. It's a black disc with sparkles on it, like a 45 that has been bedazzled.

Cee Lo was pleasantly surprised. He likes McBride.

Blake Shelton said they both are giving it everything they've got and he chose Sera.

McBride took off his glasses and connected with Adam Levine.

However, the one who makes the decision is Aguilera and she selects...a commercial break. We'll be back.

"The Voice" is heading into battle.

The popular reality singing competition on NBC enters its "battle rounds" tonight, where members of the teams selected by celebrity coaches Christina Aguilera, Cee-Lo Green, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton battle each other.

Temecula musician Lee Koch is a member of Team Xtina. He snagged a spot on her team on last week's episode with his spirited version of Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone."

Temecula is clearly a fertile breeding ground for good voices on "The Voice."

Last year, Xenia charmed the judges and America, making it very far in the competition.

Last night, Lee Koch's rendition of Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone" kept him in the musical game.

"I can't wait to work with you," judge/mentor Christina Aguilera said.

She said the harmonica really sold it for her.

Koch explained that he had put his musical dreams aside to become a baker and that making it through brought those dreams back to life. A source has tipped me off that Lee works at the Great Harvest Bread Co. Anyone out there know him?

Watch his performance below. Do you think Lee Koch can win the whole thing? (Fun fact: Right after his performance, the commercial break featured an appearance and the music of another Inland band--Neon Trees and their new single "Everybody Talks." Coincidence or fate?)

IDOL: Hollywood Week comes to a close

OK, now we have another sick contestant who came back from the hospital.

Skylar Laine takes the stage to remind herself it is only one minute and sins The Band Perry's "You Lie."

Steven Tyler loves it.

Another country singer takes the stage and restarts after she botches the words.

Adam Brock looks like Elvis Costello but says it's time for AI to have some "white chocolate up in here" for "Georgia on My Mind."

He has a great voice. He better get picked. I want to see what he does on Disco Week!
Solo day is done--we're in the waiting rooms for more cuts.

Room number one has Jen Hirsh and Craighton Fraker--they must be in.

Adam Brock is in room number 1. They are so in.

Nice attempt at a psych-out, Randy Jackson. I already said they were in.

Room three is full of mixed emotions and some whiners. Oooh-a fight might break out.

Room two has crazy Reid Grimm and they're going through.

We're back to room three and the emotional people.

Randy Jackson said it's the toughest year and the most talent. The room gets cut and Steven Tyler talks about getting booed off the stage when he was starting out.

Now we're at room four and they're going through to the next round.

Steven Tyler is dancing with them.

Now the group is going to Las Vegas.

Did anyone see out other Inland contestants tonight?

Viva Las Vegas and may Steven Tyler have mercy on your scarves and sequins.

Comments  | Recommend

To the start the day after group day, Randy Jackson and Steven Tyler rock out with the contestants.

There are 98 people left and they all get to sing solo with the band and can play their own instruments, but they won't get any feedback from the judges.

Joshua Ledet didn't want to get on the pane because of his anxiety. We see shots of LAX and contestants and now he's singing.

Well, he got a standing ovation from the judges.

Wow, there is a guy who is a professional facepainter--I want to know about that. Colton Dixon, if you're out there, please explain.

There is a guy named Phil Phillips and I was convinced I knew the song he was singing and I can't place it.

Wait, Jen Hirsh is singing a crazy awesome rendition of "Georgia On My Mind," and it just dawned on me that Phillips was singing Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game."

However, Charming Husband is impressed that I figured out what song that was.

Back to Hirsh, she gets a standing ovation.

Creighton Fraker's occupation is "Starving Artist."

He sounds great, but I am confused by the jacket he stole from Eddie Vedder and shrunk in the dryer.

What? It's raining? Seacrest seems confused. I am, too, as to why this matters.

Oh, cue the cheesy thunder sound effects while people miss their lyrics.

Now there's Reid Grimm, who isn't prepared and the vocal coach is exasperated with him.

I'm exasperated, too. When you have 30 minutes to try to pull this together, you shouldn't be stopping to take a phone break, dude.

OK, the guy is back and I am confused. Is he singing? Is he not singing and wasting the time of the coach?

Reid is now going to play the drums.

He's making the music director nervous.

It goes well, though, with Randy Jackson comparing him to season 10 contestant and Idyllwild native Casey Abrams, who made it to the top 10. I don't see it--I think Casey's voice was stronger and more unique, but Casey did play the bass.

Clearly, the drums are like Dumbo's magic feather.

Steven Tyler calls it "extraordinary."

Only 30 minutes left. Take us into another long commercial break.

Comments  | Recommend

We're halfway through the first hour, and host Ryan Seacrest keeps talking.

You know, it's always bothered me that Hollywood Week really happens in Pasadena.

Cue the montage of missing lyrics and messed up lyrics.

Even Steven Tyler said "It's a comedy of errors."

Oh no, the belligerent cop is coming up with the guy who continued to puke.

I wouldn't get too close, group, that guy was really sick.

I think I just saw Symone Black, of Rancho Cucamonga, in the audience.

Since people were falling asleep in the audience, the whole group gets cut. I guess it's better than needing a trash can.

Now someone else fainted.

Hey, "Idol," these people are dropping like flies--are you going to do anything about this?

Now we have a bunch of kids who look like they're 12 and are called the Hollywood Five, but they all can sing. And nobody fainted!

They all made it through.

Then the latest fainter wants to join her group and after collapsing again, makes her way to the group.

These people are starting to look like zombies.

Imani Handy is hanging in there--even though she looks like she's about to collapse. Oh no, she did. And Ryan Seacrest cursed and got the "Idol" logo placed over his lips.

Judge Randy Jackson stops the group and we have a dramatic commercial break.
The judges think its nerves. Apparently they don't realize she is really ill.

Handy gets a warning about the stresses of the competition from J-Lo, but she gets cut.
We see Black and she gets cut.

"This isn't it for me, I know that for a fact," the 16-year-old said.

IDOL: Illness overtakes Hollywood Week

Vanessa here, watching "American Idol" so you don't have to, and keeping tabs on our locals.

"American Idol" surged on through Hollywood Week, weeding through the 185 contestants left before group day. We've got a two-hour show tonight and we're keeping an eye out for our Inland contestants.

Last week, Symone Black, of Rancho Cucamonga, was shown falling off the stage, collapsing.

She turned out to be dehydrated and returned to find a group and soldier on with some inspiration/help from her dad.

Up first we see The Bettys, who battled illness, sleeplessness and control freaks to bomb their audition with only two of the five going through.

In the meantime, people keep vomiting thanks to what Ryan Seacrest keeps calling the "Idol Bug."

Thankfully, the second group is much better and nobody vomits, including the judges.
They all made it through to the next round.

Now we have the origin of the "Idol Bug" and her group member just fainted. But she sucks it up and tries to hold on and sing.

Only one of the non-ill ones makes it through and Patient Zero is going back to live in her tent in Tennessee. If Gwyneth Paltrow and Matt Damon show up, I'm out.
No sign of Black or any of our other Inland contestants yet.

As I blogged last night, The Brewer Boys of Temecula were sent home on Fox reality show "The X Factor," but not without encouragement from their judge/mentor Paula Abdul.

The pair did a mashup of Hall & Oates' "Rich Girl" and George Michael's "Faith" in their acoustic pop way.

They were up against some tough opposition in the groups category. Do you think Paula made the right decision?

X FACTOR: Manufactured groups perform

We're back and Intensity is up next. They were all soloists but made it through as a group.

There are a lot people in this group. They're singing "Footloose" and I'm having flashbacks to my childhood and "KIDS Incorporated."

This means someone in this group will go on to be Fergie.

The choreography worked better for them than The Brewer Boys, but I liked the Brewer Boys more.

L.A. Reid is impressed that the group of soloists turned into a true group.

Nicole calls them her "little pumpkin patch of yummy pumpkins."

Is she trying to out-Abdul Paula?

Simon called it a "music miracle." He called them the new "Glee."

Did anyone pay attention to the first half of the song?

Paula is very proud.

Up next is the other manufactured group, Lakoda Rayne. Apparently they had a tough soundcheck.

Oh no. OH NO. Are they seriously taking on "Come On Eileen," an '80s classic? Where are your denim overalls?

Remember what I said earlier about "KIDS Incorporated"? My new pick is one of these ladies will be Fergie, possibly the one with the sparkly pants.

L.A. is ready to sign them now.

Nicole said they make girl groups look good.

Paula is tearing up.

Simon is ready to sign them, too.

However, only three of the four can make it.

Justin and Nathan Brewer, of Temecula, are up on "The X Factor."

The Brewer Boys have been performing locally for years and now are on the cusp of being one of 12 finalists competing for the public's votes on the reality show.

"These guys are cool with a definitive sound," Paula introduces them.

We see the boys at home in Temecula wine country, with their family and playing with their dogs.

Justin, 17, opens the performance with Hall & Oates' "Rich Girl."

Nathan, 14, comes in and the pair go into George Michael's "Faith" as they're surrounded by dancers.

I am digging the mandolin touches from Nathan.

Now it's time for a hoedown version of "Rich Girl."

I actually like both of these pieces, but don't know if they totally work together. I thought the brothers sounded good.

L.A. Reid thinks they did a good job, but he said Paula pushed them outside of their comfort zone.

"I don't know if I was blown away, but it was very good," he said.

Nicole wants to put the brothers on her wall, like Paula..

Simon thinks they progressed, but wants to remind everyone that it's a $5 million soundtrack. He didn't like the choreography.

Paula thinks they've come a long way and "nailed it" and have a unique sound.

Stereo Hogzz kicks off the group portion of the competition. They compare it to the playoffs.

They're doing "Try A Little Tenderness" with choreography we haven't seen since the likes of Duckie in "Pretty in Pink."

I like the mix of R&B and hip-hop with this version until we get the disco beat at the end.

Paula's doing the seal clap. She likes it.

L.A. Reid likes it. Nicole calls it "foolproof," "current and classic at the same time." Simon Cowell likes it and even compliments Paula. He loves them.

However, Temecula act The Brewer Boys will be next.

And we're back.

Philip Lomax is a crooner who wants to be a pop star. Either way, he's busting out a Frank Sinatra/Jason Mraz fedora in the pre-performance package.

WHAT? A bad karaoke version of Smashmouth's "I'm a Believer" with weird dancers wearing strange skimpy bellhop uniforms?

Philip is picking it up here at the end.

OOH! Confetti cannons! Confetti cannons make everything better.

Nicole said he was "radiating" up there. Paula calls his smile his "golden ticket."

Simon isn't a fan of the song, either and tells L.A. that he "100 percent failed." OH SNAP! I may actually watch this show.

Marcus Canty is back after yet another commercial break.

OMG, this guy with the Bobby Brown voice is doing Culture Club's "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?" I kind of love this.

Nicole thinks he makes it look too easy and he was born to be on that stage.

Everyone loves him.

L.A. Reid puts Astro, Marcus Canty and Chris Rene through. Philip Lomax is taking his suit and fedora back to Seattle.

X FACTOR: First live show

So Fox is saying 17 acts will be narrowed to 12 tonight on "The X Factor."

Is it just me or is this announcer a bit over the top and almost a parody?

We see a quick clip of The Brewer Boys, Justin and Nathan, in the intro.

I feel like everything about "The X Factor" graphics takes "American Idol" and takes it to a new level--like the universe flashing by the X logo in the intro.

Each mentor/judge is only allowed to choose three acts to move on to next week's competition where America gets to vote.

At this point I'm wondering if I will ever be able to spell Nicole Scherzinger without triple-checking it first.

We just found out that the winner gets $5 million and a recording contract and a Pepsi commercial.

Also, did Simon Cowell we know from "American Idol" fall into some sort of time warp and become nice? It's disturbing. Looks like L.A. Reid's group--the boys--are up first.

Temecula 'The Voice' teen makes iTunes charts

If being on national television and choosing country star Blake Shelton as your mentor wasn't good enough, 16-year-old Temecula native Xenia Martinez can now add having a single on the iTunes chart to that list.

As of noon today, her version of The Script's "Breakeven (Falling to Pieces)" is No. 87 on the top 100 iTunes chart.

That is a big accomplishment for someone without a recording contract and was on television this week for a matter of minutes.

As a point of reference, her single is selling better than these songs right now:

"I Gotta Feeling" by The Black Eyed Peas (No. 90)
"Never Say Never" by Justin Bieber (No. 93)
"Stuck Like Glue" by Sugarland (No. 98)

Even more interesting are the songs close ahead of her on the charts. The Script's original "Breakeven" is at No. 85 and fellow "The Voice" star Cee-Lo Green's "Crazy," from his time with Gnarls Barkley is No. 84.

Temecula resident advances on 'The Voice'

Xenia.jpg

Xenia Martinez, 16, from Temecula made a big splash on the new NBC singing competition "The Voice" Tuesday night.

The show has contestants singing for four coaches (singers Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton), but the twist is the coaches have their backs turned to the stage and must pick singers for their 8 person teams by talent alone.

In interviews before she took to the stage, Martinez said she was a very shy person and that people at her high school might even be surprised that she was a singer.

She sang The Script's "Break Even" and had a jazzy, raspy voice.

There was a bit of suspense during her performance as none of the judges pushed the magic button to say they wanted her on their team for the first half of the song. Then Green did, which made her family quite happy. Shelton soon followed.

Shelton said there was something very special about her voice.

Green said that she had an old soul and said she had a unique blend.

In the end, Martinez chose to be a part of Team Blake.

Even host Carson Daly said there was something magical about her voice.

Afterward Shelton said he was shocked when he turned around and saw a 16-year-old girl standing there.

"The Voice" can be seen on NBC Tuesdays at 9 p.m.
