Why is it so much easier to put together a mission statement
for a company or a team than it is for ourselves?
As part of our organization's Results
Only Work Environment (R.O.W.E), each staff person is being asked to write
a short personal mission statement and map out specific monthly goals for the
year that tie in with our core values. This gives us a way to track how
successfully we've accomplished our desired results.
Amazingly, the goals don't seem to be a problem. It's the personal
mission statement that's causing a bit of a panic.
Maybe it's because there is no "right" answer, no perfect buzzword or
formula. It's really all about who you are as an individual, who you want
to become, what's important to you and how you want to focus your energy.
Who are you really? What are your talents? What do you love doing?
What do you hate? When are you happiest? Where are you going? How do you want
to be remembered?
When you really know who you are and what you want to become, it becomes easy
to frame that to fit every aspect of your life: spiritual, work, family, etc.
Franklin Covey has a fabulous tool to help you put together your personal
mission statement based on your answers to ten questions. Give it a try
and let me know what you think. You might be surprised at the results.
